Hello All, I need your help again.

I have a 2004 emachine running Windows Xp. Since several programs stopped running, I assumed I had a virus and tried my best to remove it, but now I think the damage is done because the programs are still not responding.

Here is what happened: Norton systemworks-anitvirus won't update, resident won't turn on, won't contact website, won't run the website's virus removal tool
No search feature in Windows
No System Restore in Windows
No Microsoft Update, it won't even load the site.
No Media Player. Nothing happens from the desktop shortcut, the taskbar shortcut or the programs list.

I tried to manually remove Norton, I got most of it. There are still 3 .dll files in the Norton Folder under Program Files.

I installed AVG virus and ran it-no viruses.

Ran the Avast! virus removal tool. No virus found

I installed Avast! antivirus, did a thorough, or deep, scan and it found two worms: whale.9216. Tried sending them to the Virus Chest. Operation failed. Found the files the virus were in and deleted them.

Avast! website also suggested downloading and running Dr. Web virus removal tool CureIt! Did that. It found two .exe files for Desk Smasher. I think it was an old game, I don't know. It prompted me to delete them so I did.

Next, I downloaded latest versions of Adaware and Spybot and ran each individually and restarted, per instructions on this site. Adaware found some cookies and Spybot said all clean.

Now, my problem: I still have no Search feature, system restore, or microsoft update in windows. Most other Microsoft programs work, outlook, word, publisher.

Here is my HiJackThis log. I renamed it ABC.exe just incase the virus messes with it as well.

Please help, I don't know what to do next.

Thanks,
Clint

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.

Ken, thanks for the tips and your time.

I was able to complete all the tasks, but when I ran the AVG Anti Spyware, I must have done something wrong because it didn't give me a report to save. It did find 108 items to fix. It took forever to scan so I will run it again tonight and post the report in the morning.

I didn't realize there could be so much junk on my computer! I thought my regular Ad-Aware scans would keep me from getting all that malware.

Here is my latest HJT log.

Good Morning Clint :D

I didn't realize there could be so much junk on my computer! I thought my regular Ad-Aware scans would keep me from getting all that malware.

After we get you cleaned up I will give you a list of some free programs to install to help stop this garbage from installing on your system.

You should be able to go into AVG and under Reports there may be one, post it into this thread.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\Userinit.exe

If you set this then leave it otherwise fix it
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

This may have been where you got all this crapola from
O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} - http://dm.screensave.../sinstaller.cab

Fix these unless you know what they are.
O16 - DPF: {10DE6CF7-3E36-445B-985D-07603082B36B} (FormLoader.Loader) - http://forms.orefonl...Loader_RMLS.CAB
O16 - DPF: {CAFECAFE-0013-0001-0013-ABCDEFABCDEF} - http://esisathome.be...iator/jinit.exe

I need you to run a few more scan. The first one will check for Rootkits.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Run both these free online virus scanners, run Housecall first and if it finds anything and cleans it, run it again to make sure its gone. You will have to use Internet Explorer for both of these scans to run. Then run Panda, it will give you an extensive report that may point to something that is hiding so be sure to save the report and post it into your next reply.

Please run Trend Micro House Call
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • 12. Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

I need this.

Hello Ken, sorry it took so long to get back. Here is the latest (second) AVG anti spyware scan log. And the Blacklight log. I could not use either the Trend Micro scanner or the Panda scanner. IE would take me to the pages, but either the buttons wouldn't work, on the Panda page, or the button went to a dead page that showed nothing. I tried to update IE, but any microsoft updater programs aren't working right now. --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 7:16:41 AM 3/21/2007 + Scan result: C:\Documents and Settings\Kelley\Cookies\kelley@microsoftwlmessengermkt.112.2o7[1].txt -> TrackingCookie.2o7 : Cleaned. ::Report end BLACKLIGHT: 03/21/07 20:48:36 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.55 initialized 03/21/07 20:48:36 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2) 03/21/07 20:48:37 [Note]: 7019 4 03/21/07 20:48:37 [Note]: 7005 0 03/21/07 20:48:42 [Note]: 7006 0 03/21/07 20:48:42 [Note]: 7011 1796 03/21/07 20:48:43 [Note]: 7026 0 03/21/07 20:48:43 [Note]: 7026 0 03/21/07 20:48:52 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1021 03/21/07 20:51:11 [Note]: 2000 1012 03/21/07 20:51:30 [Note]: 7007 0 Sorry, that is all I have for you. Clint,

All AVG found was a cookie and Blacklight came up clean.

Try this.

Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system you may or may not need your Windows XP CD.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Files > and offline content as well
  • Then go to the Programs Tab and Reset Web Settings

Let me see a new HJT log to make sure nothing has changed

Hey Ken, I ran the sfc /scannow and it took some time, showed the progress bar, and didn't do anything. I ran it with the XP disc in and out. I still can't run Search or Media Player or Microsoft Update. On the plus side, my computer does seem to be running faster!

Here is the latest HJT log:

I ran the sfc /scannow and it took some time, showed the progress bar, and didn't do anything.
You wont see it do anything. There is a way to see what it has done but if things are still the same then there is no need .

You have TWO Anti Virus programs running and thats a big NO NO. Running two will eat up system resources and can cause you problems, your call but you need to uninstall one via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Avast4
Norton

Fix these with HJT.

This is just a reminder to register
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Register MediaRing Talk] C:\Program Files\MediaRing Talk\register.exe

Fix this unless you set it yourself
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

This is from Real Player, if you uninstalled it then remove this entry
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Fix this unless you know what it is and its safe

O16 - DPF: {CAFECAFE-0013-0001-0013-ABCDEFABCDEF} - http://esisathome.be...iator/jinit.exe

Run your system for a few hours and see if removing one of the AVs made a difference. Post a new HJT log and I will check it over later this afternoon.

Hello again,

I have removed the items from the HJT scan except:

O16 - DPF: {CAFECAFE-0013-0001-0013-ABCDEFABCDEF} - http://esisathome.be...iator/jinit.exe
This is one of mine.

As for the two virus programs; when I got the virus, it messed up Norton and wouldn't let me run it, update it, or remove it, so I tried to remove it manually following some instructions I found online here:

http://www.askdaveta..._my_system.html

I thought I removed everything but when you asked if Norton was installed, I went back and checked and found a few more files that I had missed. Incidently, during this process you have been helping me with, each time I installed a program you told me to, a window would pop up saying Norton couldn't install the program. I cancelled the Norton window and all the programs installed successfully anyway. I haven't seen that since my last post though.

I still have the AVG anti spyware program running on start up. I am assuming that is ok?

I still cannot open Media player, search, or update any Microsoft programs. My computer is an Emachine, I know, most computer savvy people cringe when they hear that, but it has been rock solid for three years. The XP cd that came with the computer is one of those "restore" cd's, not an official XP cd. Does that make any difference in the sfc scan?

Here is the latest HJT log:

I still have the AVG anti spyware program running on start up. I am assuming that is ok?

This is one of the better programs for removing malware and its yours to keep after the trial, you will still be able to check for updates, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature.

Symantec has a removal tool to remove all there products, post a new HJT log after you run it and lets see if there is anything left, you have quite a few Norton services still running.

I tried to download the Norton Removal tool, but nothing happened. I clicked the download button but nothing happened. The same thing happened when I tried to download the Panda cleaner and several other programs. :( What next? Clint

You have Netscape installed, have your tried both Netscape and Internet Explorer? Can you download the Firefox browser and install it.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

If still no luck, you need to use another computer to download the Norton Removal tool and copy it to a disk and tranfer it to this pc and run it.

I am sure that trying to remove Norton manually made a real mess and Avast4 just added to your problems. If you look at all the Norton services still running in your 023 entries , this I am sure is causing you a lot of problems, but we need to remove the entire Norton product, removing the services will still leave Norton installed.

Alright, I was able to download the Symantec removal tool using Netscape and I have run it successfully. I was looking at the HJT log and didn't see any of the previous references to Norton. Does this mean it has been completely removed?

You mentioned that the Avast anti virus could be causing some problems. Should I remove it and go back to the AVG? Or were the problems caused by the two anti virus programs together and Avast should be alright on its own?

Thanks,

Clint

Clint :D

Good job  It looks like Norton is gone. What I meant was not having two Anti Virus programs running and you don't, you have just Avast Anti Virus which is an excellent program by the way and you have AVG Anti Spyware which is fine to keep.

Remove these with HJT , they are just set up files and not needed.

The rest of your log is fine  How are things running now??

I refmoved the last 2 entries with HJT. Everything seems to be running faster, but I still can't open Media player, run a search, or update Microsoft. All this probably means something bad, right? :( Clint
