When I started having trouble with iTunes and email viewing about 10 days ago, I began trying to find out what could be wrong by asking at some other sites. I hope you can help me here. The main things found so far: CWShredder found and removed CWSMsconfig; TDS3 found and removed Joke Win32 Life. Online virus scans at Panda and Trend found AdWare--MyWay and Jokepad respectively. A thorough virus scan by AVG in safe mode found nothing. I just ran Spybot S&D and AdaWare, checked for any critical Win updates, removed temp files in Ccleaner, Windows, System. I posted Scan log and an Add/Remove HJ log as asked by different techs, but am having trouble getting them analyzed at these other sites. I hope someone can help me so I can resolve the question about whether or not I have bad things on my system. I have uninstalled iTunes, but will not reinstall until resolving this. Still having trouble with viewing jpgs, gifs and certain emails, no matter whether it is IncrediMail, Thunderbird or Outlook Express. If I understood correctly, I should post that in a different forum, so will not get into any more of that trouble, unless asked here.

Thanks for your help!

DeeJa,

Sorry for the delay, your log looks fairly healthy. I see one line that needs to be fixed.

Run HJT Scan Only, put a checkmark in the entry below, close all open windows and web browsers and click on FIX CHECKED

* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html

Go to START > CONTROL PANEL> ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS and remove a program called MY Search if it is listed. Not the Dell My Search.

Download and run the Hoster Program..Instructions here..

Please download HOSTER from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad...load/hoster.zip

* Unzip Hoster.zip to your Desktop
* Open Hoster.exe.
* Close all Open Windows.
* Then click on Restore Original Hosts
* Close program when complete.

Now run SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY 1.4

You can use the links in my signature to download the latest version. If you do have version 1.4, then after you run Hoster, open Spybot and set it the way I have it in the tutorial. Make sure to install the hosts file and lock them down like in my set up instructions.

* Install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS.

Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINENCE/ ADD-REMOVE
PROGRAMS
scroll to that program and click on REMOVE.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to MODE and click on ADVANCED MODE.
* Then to SETTINGS / IGNORE PRODUCTS and put a checkmark in DSO EXPLOITS.
* Then to SETTINGS / FILE SETS and take the checkmark out ofUSAGE TRACKS.
* Then to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILE and then on the top click on ADD SPYBOT S & D HOSTS FILES.
* Then to TOOLS/ IE TWEAKS and put a checkmark in LOCK THE HOSTS FILES
* Then check for UPDATES.
* Then to Immunize. then up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on IMMUNIZE.
* Then go to the top to SPYBOT and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN.
* Then to FIX PROBLEMS and fix all it finds.

Then RE-BOOT your computer.

Let me know if you found My Search in the add remove program lists. When your done, post a new log please so I can go over it again.

If your problem is not Malware related, I can direct you to some excellent Windows Tech Support forums.

Hi ken545!

Thanks for your time and help--I really do appreciate you and the many others who help!

I want to make sure I am deleting the right item in the first part of your response. When I right click on this:

* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html

it takes me to a page that says Dell Search Assistant, powered by My Way. I just want to make sure that this item should be deleted. As far as Add/Remove, what I have listed is My Way Search Assistant--the support information has nothing about Dell--only MyWay. I have no other search programs as far as I can tell. Do you think that this MyWaySearch Assistant is the same as MySearch? Or is this the Dell search assistant? Just want to make sure I am getting rid of the right search thing.

I look forward to going through the rest of your recommendations. Thanks again SO MUCH for your help!

Good Morning DeeJa, biggrin. :D

Please remove both these lines

* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
* R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

Now reboot your computer in to Safemode and have windows enabled to show all files and folders. Instructions here.

SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

To enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART

* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY
somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.

* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll
up to SAFEMODE

* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now look for and delete the following folder.

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA <-- This entire folder in Bold

Then run the rest of the instructions I gave you earlier and when your done, post a new HJT log please.

hi Ken545! I got the two entries out of the HJ log. My Way Search Assistant is still in Add/Remove. When I try to remove it, I get a prompt that says "Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\desrcas.dll. The specified module could not be found." When I first opened the browser, I got a prompt from WinPatrol that a change had been made concerning the browser. It asked if I wanted the above dll put back in and I told it yes. That was probably the wrong thing to do, but I did it hoping it would help me to be able to remove the program. I found the dll in WinPatrol, IE Helper Tab, deSrcAs.dll. Should I now remove it through WinPatrol? I scanned again with HJ and those two entries are not there. Sorry if I did something wrong in all that. How do I get rid of MyWaySearchAssistant? What do I do about the dll that I got rid of and then allowed back in? Thanks so much Ken!

DeeJa,

Right click on Scotty the dog for Win Patrol in the system tray and Exit Program first
.
Remove this line in HJT, close all open windows and browsers and click on Fix Checked.

* O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

Don't worry about that dll file just yet. The problem is that My Way Search Assisstant is known Malware and why Dell named there program the same thng is beyond me. It looks like they are intwined together.

Now do the safemode thing and remove this folder if you haven't already done so.

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA <-- This Folder

Please post a new log when your done.

Ken

The program folder-- MyWaySA--is deleted from Program Files. In Add/Remove, MyWaySearchAssistant is still there. I still get the same RUNDLL warning when trying to remove it. Aida32 lists MyWaySearchAssistant--twice. One listing has no version listed, unknown inst. size. The other says 1.0.256 for version #, unknown for inst. size. Let me know how to get MyWay out of Add/Remove.

I really do appreciate all your help, Ken! Thanks!

Hi Ken545!

I just ran Hoster, then ran HJ to get the above log. That website did not look familiar to me, so no, I don't need/use it.

Should I go ahead with the Spybot scan now?

:-) Thanks SO much!

:) Hi Ken,

O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com is gone from this latest HJ log! Google has this about it:

http://www.wildersse...goto=nextoldest

I used a TDS3 program recently. Hopefully it was part of that and not something bad. I did nothing to remove it just now though--don't know how or why it left.

Have a nice weekend B) I will wait to hear from you before doing anything else.

Many many THANKS!

DeeJa, Your log is looking so much better. Go ahead and run Spybot, install the hosts files and lock them down like in my tutorial. I am looking over your log and will be back soon. Ken

Hi Ken!

I had no threats when I ran Spybot S & D. I have a question about the immunization page. I usually have the option checked to block bad addresses. It is now not checked. Should I check it?

MyWaySearchAssistant is still in Add/Remove. I used a utility not long ago when I had trouble getting iTunes out of A/R--Windows Install Cleanup. Is this what I should use for this MyWay thing? Let me know. :blink:

I just opened iTunes and to see if it worked normal now...and it didn't. And the trouble with viewing jpgs in email is still there, so I am probably going to need those forums you mentioned. Now I have AIM loading when I open Outlook Express--so another abnormality? If there is a setting I can change, I don't know of it.....so let me know if there is please?

Thanks so much for all your help!

Yes, check it please. Remember to run Spybot every so often and before you do, check for updates, immunize and then run the scan.

If that program worked for you, use it again to get rid of that entry in AR.

This may be the problem or it may not, let me know if it works, if not I will direct you to some other support sites.

Open AOL IM
go to > My AIM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences > Mail and if Outlook Express is listed in there, remove it.

Now if you can, open Outlook Express and go to

Tools > Internet Options> Security and and if there is a checkmark in BLock Images , remove the checkmark.

I'm still looking over your log, be back soon

Hi Ken! MyWay was listed in the Win Installer Cleanup. I highlighted, removed, rebooted. It is no longer in that utility....but is still in A/R :angry: I get the same RUNDLL error box when I try to remove it in A/R. Anything else I can try? I have no mail groups listed in AIM. I just signed on and got an upgrade notice, so I will do that. The option in IE about blocking images was not checked. So I don't really understand what is happening. The same thing happens in IncrediMail and Thunderbird. I have tried all three over the last several days. My viewers say no preview is available. But I can view things in files and in mail previous to a certain date, around the end of May. I need to add that I cannot save these attachments and view them from file either...I am talking about being able to view files I already had in my jpg and gif folders when I say I can view files from folders. Thanks again Ken, for ALL your help....I really do appreciate it!!! I will be out for a while....will check in tonight and see what you have for me! DJ :)
