Hello dap Ok since my original post my IE has started working again 'thank you Lord', I did not do anything to enable this. I have run a couple of programs to try to cure my problems without any success, ran CCleaner and Smitfraud. Although PSGuard does not appear to show up anyware it's other part Intell32.exe does, as a Windows System File and I believe there are some registry values also. All of the damage last reported remains. I also had a virus named Trojan_Agent .XG picked up by my Trend PC-cillin which it coud not remove but gave info on how to delete registry values to do so. However the affected file itself is a file ...../System/MFCFS.exe which I cannot remove because it says Windows is using it, I suspect this keeps re-installing itself although it no longer shows in the HiJackthis log. I was reading a TomCoyotte posting on the PSGuard problem ref:- t42967 from your Siggyx to a member Carandini which tries numerous things and ends up suggesting to use the perpertrator PSGuard's own uninstaller which I was considering trying as it might put right all of the damage. However I would like your help and will follow your advice on actions. Attached is the new HijackThis log, I see there are still some problems entries I can read from it: >The URL SearchHook is missing >06- ..../Control Panel Present also a previous entry is missing: >RO- HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main,StartPage: regards......BarryA Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 19:45:43, on 12/08/2005 Platform: Windows ME (Win9x 4.90.3000) MSIE: Internet Explorer v5.50 (5.50.4134.0100) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSGSRV32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SPOOL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MPREXE.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCTLCOM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mmtask.tsk C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESTORE\STMGR.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCIOMON.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\TMPROXY.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCGUIDE.EXE C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSTRAY.EXE C:\WINDOWS\TASKMON.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMIEXE.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\TSC.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\IEXPLORE.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STIMON.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\TSC.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\BAD FILE FIXES\CLEANUP312\CLEANUP.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\BAD FILE FIXES\CWSHREDDER.EXE\CWSHREDDER.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\BAD FILE FIXES\HOSTER\HOSTER\HOSTER.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Fast4 R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O2 - BHO: (no name) - {206E52E0-D52E-11D4-AD54-0000E86C26F6} - C:\PROGRA~1\FRESHD~1\FRESHD~1\FDCATCH.DLL O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADOBE\ACROBAT 5.0\READER\ACTIVEX\ACROIEHELPER.OCX O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\spybotsd13\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll O3 - Toolbar: @msdxmLC.dll,-1@1033,&Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSDXM.OCX O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pccguide.exe] "C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2005\pccguide.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ScanRegistry] C:\WINDOWS\scanregw.exe /autorun O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TaskMonitor] C:\WINDOWS\taskmon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCHealth] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\Support\PCHSchd.exe -s O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zSPGuard] c:\program files\startpageguard\spguard.exe /s /r O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [PcCtlCom] C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCTLCOM.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [*StateMgr] C:\WINDOWS\System\Restore\StateMgr.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PopUpStopperFreeEdition] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\PANICWARE\POP-UP STOPPER\PSFREE.EXE" O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\PROGRA~1\MESSEN~1\MSMSGS.EXE O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MSN Messenger Service - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\PROGRA~1\MESSEN~1\MSMSGS.EXE O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\npjpi150_02.dll O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\npjpi150_02.dll O12 - Plugin for .spop: C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\Plugins\NPDocBox.dll

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

You may also optionally check the following entries to be fixed:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
If you haven't used Spybot S&D or another protection program to set these internet restrictions, or if your system administrator hasn't set these, check these entries too.

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked. Reboot your computer and post a new HJT log.

OK, fixed the items suggested. The first entry is still there: RO............Search Asistant= I checked previous older logs and this used to be an entry as: RO............Main,Start Page= just a thought, will IE work without an entry at all if we did successfully remove it? 2) I can see that the Intel32.exe has re-appeared and is the other file name of the PSGuard virus. Seems like either one will appear at successive startups. rgds......BarryA Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 20:14:14, on 15/08/2005 Platform: Windows ME (Win9x 4.90.3000) MSIE: Internet Explorer v5.50 (5.50.4134.0100) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSGSRV32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mmtask.tsk C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MPREXE.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCTLCOM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SPOOL32.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCIOMON.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\TMPROXY.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESTORE\STMGR.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCGUIDE.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSTRAY.EXE C:\WINDOWS\TASKMON.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\INTELL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMIEXE.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\TSC.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STIMON.EXE R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Fast4 O2 - BHO: (no name) - {206E52E0-D52E-11D4-AD54-0000E86C26F6} - C:\PROGRA~1\FRESHD~1\FRESHD~1\FDCATCH.DLL O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADOBE\ACROBAT 5.0\READER\ACTIVEX\ACROIEHELPER.OCX O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\spybotsd13\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll O3 - Toolbar: @msdxmLC.dll,-1@1033,&Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSDXM.OCX O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pccguide.exe] "C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2005\pccguide.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ScanRegistry] C:\WINDOWS\scanregw.exe /autorun O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TaskMonitor] C:\WINDOWS\taskmon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCHealth] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\Support\PCHSchd.exe -s O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zSPGuard] c:\program files\startpageguard\spguard.exe /s /r O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intell32.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [PcCtlCom] C:\PROGRAM FILES\TREND MICRO\INTERNET SECURITY 2005\PCCTLCOM.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [*StateMgr] C:\WINDOWS\System\Restore\StateMgr.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PopUpStopperFreeEdition] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\PANICWARE\POP-UP STOPPER\PSFREE.EXE" O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\PROGRA~1\MESSEN~1\MSMSGS.EXE O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MSN Messenger Service - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\PROGRA~1\MESSEN~1\MSMSGS.EXE O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\npjpi150_02.dll O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\npjpi150_02.dll O12 - Plugin for .spop: C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\Plugins\NPDocBox.dll

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

===================================================
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intell32.exe

===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Also uncheck "View my Active desktop as a web page".
Click OK then Apply and OK.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan. Make sure the Autoclean box is checked!

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
Let us know if any problems persist.

First of all had great difficulty downloading smitRem which did not arrive on the desktop in it's proper format, then would not open on double clicking, it took me 6 or 7 attempts to succeed. It ran quickly and then said "File not found: wp.bmp" and the next page then said:-
Sharing Violation reading drive C
Abort, Retry, Fail?
I tried R for retry but this just repeated the message. I tried A for Abort and this produced a final message:
wininet.dll is infected (run Panda to disinfect).

I then ran Adaware which removed a few items.
Control panal was still showing no Desktop tab in Display

I then restarted computer and desktop had returned to it's normal format.

Panda took one and a quarter hours to download structure to be able to run Active Online Scan. There was no Autoclean box showing anywhere. The scan took ages to run and showed at completion that 17 viruses had been removed and 27 spywares had been detected, but there was no report available as it says there should be!
I tried to run Pandascan again to look around again for a report and check if it produced the same number of detections, but it just froze everything. I rebooted and tried again, but it just froze again.
I cannot believe it found 17 viruses and 27 spyware as I had run PC-Cillin immediately before commencing this fix and removed any viruses and had now run Adaware, so there could not have been that many it would have found. This program was a pain to use also.

On restart I had a new message that windows could not find the file C:\Windows\pavdr.exe to start a program.

I can see that Intell32.exe is still in the HijackThis log and it is still in my System files. The only thing which appears to have changed is that my desktop appearance is repaired. All other problems first reported seem the same.

rgds............BarryA

Ok, these results are not unexpected. This is a very nasty infection and it will take a bit of work to get it cleaned up. We need to check the file C:\Windows\System\wininet.dll to see if it got cleaned up. Go to Jotti's malware scan at http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and upload the file for scanning. Let me know the results.

Ok, that's what I thought. Can you go to update.microsoft.com and download the latest updates for you Internet Explorer? That file should then be replaced. Once that is done, post a new HJT log.

Sorry for delay, was away at weekend, then difficulty running Jotti's, but here is the log, wininet.dll is spotless. Since updating IE from v5.5 to v6.0 Service Pack1 am now getting regular freeze-ups after first slowing down. Have to reboot computer to clear. Then at restart, desktop is white and have to click 'restore active desktop' to get to standard blue desktop. Also getting more error messages now. rgds...........BarryA

Ok, let's try some more scans. Please run full scans with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot-S&D as follows:
(If you already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 and Spybot 1.4 installed, you can skip the installation steps. If you don't, please uninstall your old versions and install the new ones from the links below.)

Full Ad-Aware Scan
Please download Ad-Aware SE from here:
http://www.majorgeek...ownload506.html
Install Ad-Aware and run it. In the bottom-right hand corner, click "Check for updates now". Click "Connect" to download the newest reference file.

Now we will configure Ad-Aware to perform a full scan. In the Ad-Aware main window, click on the gear icon at the top of the screen to open the preferences window. In the "General" window, make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically save log-file
2) Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
3) Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Click the "Scanning" button on the left-hand side and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Scan within archives
2) Scan active processes
3) Scan registry
4) Deep scan registry
4) Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
5) Scan my Hosts file

Please also click on "Select drives & folders to scan" and select your hard drive(s). Then click the "Advanced" button on the left-hand side and make sure all the options under "Log-file Detail Level" are selected. Next, click the "Tweak" button on the left-hand side. Click on "Scanning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Unload recognized processes & modules during scanning
2) Obtain command line of scanned processes
3) Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Click on "Cleaning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Always try to unload modules before deletion
2) During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
3) Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
4) Delete quarantined objects after restoring

Finally, click on "Safety Settings" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically select problematic objects in results lists
2) Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)

Click on "Proceed" to save the preferences. Then please click the "Start" button on the bottom right side to begin a scan. Select "Use custom scanning options" and then click "Next". Ad-Aware will then scan for malware. When it is finished, make sure any objects listed in RED are selected and click "Next" to remove the objects. Then please restart your computer.

Spybot Full Scan
Next, please download Spybot-S&D from here:
http://www.majorgeek...ad.php?det=2471
Install Spybot-S&D and run it. Select "Search for updates" and then select all available updates. Click on the drop-down box in the top center to choose a download location nearest to you. Then click "Download updates". When all updates have downloaded, close Spybot-S&D, and then run it again. Click on "Check for problems". When the scan has finished, select any entries listed in red and click "Fix selected problems". Then please restart your computer again.

Let me know how the scans go and if anything cannot be removed.

Difficulty unistalling old versions of Ad-aware and Spybot, had to download fix for Spybot from Home site and Ad-aware uninstall crashed my system, had to manually delete files in Safe Mode eventually. Eventually installed and ran new versions and Ad-aware deleted about 80 PSGuard related items!

Made some progress this time, all my ancilliary programs appear to be working now, except System Tools, Cleandisk froze the system first attempt but ran second time, Scandisk hangs as does Defrag.

My new vesion of IE is somewhat unstable, it keeps dropping my connection at page launches and also I get Windows message that IE has error and must close and to send error report.

At one restart I got white desktop and had to click to restore active desktop.

Log is looking better now:-
