Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Besides the fact that HJT.exe needs a folder where you are running it on the desktop, use this information to properly position it: http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm and you do have clutter and junk that should be removed. The major problem I see is that you are running two powerful antivirus programs at the same time. The conflicts caused by this make it very difficult to troubleshoot other issues. Here they are:
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\
c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\

The first thing you need to do is decide which AV program you are going to use, then uninstall the other. Make sure it is gone, turn it off in Services also. Once that is done, then update the one you kept, and run a complete system scan. I suggest you set the one you kept to autoupdates. I am very surprised that the Windows SP2 Security Center has not been telling you about this. Once you complete this, and properly position HJT.exe, post a new log and I'll help with the removal of the clutter and other adware I see.

Thanks...pskelley

OK, good job following those instructions. Rather than rushing this through, I would like to give your computer a good cleaning. If this is ok with you, then proceed like this.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

I believe Yahoo is your Startpage, I will leave that and remove all of the other Yahoo clutter that can only slow down your browser.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dellnet.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. I need to know how your computer is running now.

I noticed this: If you use Adobe, your have an old version, 7.0 is available.

You are running programs you may not need everytime you boot. If you wish to know about them, let me know.

Thanks...Phil

FAIT ACCOMPLI!
OK, scanned my way through three beers! Things seem to be running better, though the PC still gets hung up when I reboot, meaning I get a black screen with a blinking curser in the upper left hand corner which lasts about 5 minutes, then windows kicks in, I am not sure if this has anything to do with the things you have been helping me with. I am interested in doing anything wich will improve the performance of my PC including the issue of programs running which I don't need.

Here is the HJT log and the EWIDO report is at the bottom.

OK, the HJT log seems to be clean of malware, and I am not real sure what is causing the delay in rebooting so anything you wish to try that may help is fine. Any error message you get is vip, and I will need it "word for word" I believe we have all of the malware. I will point out a few items in the log, and try a few things. Your feedback is important. Since the symptoms sounds like it may be something other than malware, I would appreciate it if you would post here: http://forums.tomcoy...hp?showforum=83 Describe your issue to the best of your ability, and also post a link to this thread so they can see what we have tried. There are folks there with much knowledge and they don't spend all of their time chasing malware like I do.

Here are a few things I see in the log: Look at the Dell Photo Printer program. It looks like it is running all of the time. If you use it everyday, that is fine, if not I would turn it off in MSConfig and start it in All Programs when needed. I am not sure, but the delay might be the time it takes for all of the programs to load, I have two Dells, one is new with nothing much on it yet. The other is a two year old work horse 4550 with only 258 MB's of RAM (do I need more, you bet I do) and it takes every bit of five minutes to load.
This: C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe see this information: http://www.liutiliti...library/dsagnt/
I agree with Bleeping Computer and long ago turned it off on my Dell http://www.bleepingc....exe-11581.html

This item: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot is another reource waster, keep it if you use it, I long ago removed it prefering WMP10...your call.
http://castlecops.co...plist-9746.html

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Steam] "c:\valve\steam\steam.exe" -silent
http://castlecops.co...plist-4887.html

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Washer] C:\Program Files\Washer\washer.exe /0
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [washindex] C:\Program Files\Washer\washidx.exe "DAD"
http://castlecops.co...plist-4152.html

Looks like there is no program for this, and that is probably a good thing, I would use HJT to remove these lines.
O9 - Extra button: AdsGone - {ECC5777A-6E88-BFCE-13CE-81F134789E7B} - C:\Program Files\AdsGone\adsgone (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: &AdsGone Settings - {ECC5777A-6E88-BFCE-13CE-81F134789E7B} - C:\Program Files\AdsGone\adsgone (file missing)

It very well me be that it is a combination of things slowing your computer down at bootup, or it may be something they will know at the general forum.

I will give you this information, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.o...topic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas....re/allclear.htm
http://forum.malware...wtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingc...topict2520.html

and ask you to try this: this. Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
Let me know if that helps.

and let me look at your uninstall list in case I spot something:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks...Phil

I have performed the actions you requested, except for the system scan thingy, because I can't find the windows disk that came with my dell. Here is the uninstall list, and I posted the steps I have taken at the link you sent me. Thanks for your help, I know you do this for donations and I have made one. I hope the help you give others is financially profitable for you. Go ahead and run System File Checker anyway. Dell usually has a folder with backups on the computer. If it needs one it will get it. You will only hear about it IF it needs a file and it is not there. I suggest you locate that CD, if you every need to reformat you will be in a world of trouble without it.

Thanks for your help, I know you do this for donations and I have made one. I hope the help you give others is financially profitable for you.

We are all volunteers and the thanks you just gave me is what I work for :) I'm sure Tom can use the donation, must cost lots to run a website like this.

Uninstall list: I'll look for bad stuff or anything I see. You should use this as an opportunity to remove any programs you do not know or no longer use.

Adobe Reader 6.0.1 << new version available if you use it.

ewido security suite <<< unless you plan to purchase, turn it off in MSConfig and disable it in Services...no need for it to run and use resources. You can still start it, update and run it manually when you wish.
http://is-it-true.or...s/utips76.shtml

MSN Messenger 6.1 <<< if you use it 7.0 is available and 7.5 is in beta.

Viewpoint Media Player <<< resouce waster installed usually without your knowledge by aol. I would uninstall it in Add Remove programs.

I see nothing that is malware that I recognize. You do have a load of programs, I can't say removing the ones you no longer use will help your issue, but it won't hurt it.

Thanks...Phil
