Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

In the box type in services.msc then hit < Enter > (or click OK)

In the Name column look for:

NTBOOTMGR

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

In the Name column look for:

NTSVCMGR

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

In the Name column look for:

Windows TCP/IP Socket Driver

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\system\driver\ntsrv.exe <--- file

c:\windows\winsock\csrss.exe <--- file
(DELETE THIS CSRSS.EXE FILE IN THIS FOLDER ONLY!!!)

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread.

You have an "interesting" program running that I can find no info on, but I believe it to be malicious:

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit this file for a virus scan:

CURRENT COMPUTER

Push these three keys at the same time:

<CTRL><ALT><DEL>

The task manger will appear.

Click the "Processes" tab, then click "Image name" to sort them alphabetically.

<right-click> on csrss.xe and choose "End process"

Close the task manager.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft ® Windows TCP/IP Socket Driver] C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe

O23 - Service: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation (wgav) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wgav.exe

O23 - Service: Windows TCP/IP Socket Driver (winsck) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Now, please go to:

Start --> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit < Enter > (or click OK)

In the Name column look for:

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wgav.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Windows TCP/IP Socket Driver

< Double-click > it.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. MOVE (drag-and-drop) HijackThis into this folder.

there is no winsock file C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe but i searched my computer and i couldn't find it. i think i'm giong to delete the client thingy. Thanks a bunch, do you guys get paid for doing this? it seem difficult. helped me a bunch =] :)

WinVNC4.exe is a legitamate program. From what I understand it's a "remote desktop" program that allows you to "control" your PC from another location. There's a thread here on the forum with someone who has had their PC "hacked into" by someone using this program. So, if you don't use it, I'd remove it. Just one less thing to worry about.

The only "payment" we receive is the knowledge that when we're finished there's one less infected computer on the Net.

My Wife acquired a "CoolWebSearch" infection on our PC on 02/29/04, at about 2:30 in the afternoon, from a free song lyrics site.

A volunteer on a malware removal site helped me remove it.

I'm just trying to return the favor.

It's not really "difficult" most of the time. I consider it "exasperating" at times. I have my own "home brewed" PERL program I use to analyze the logs with that helps me "speed up the process" quite a bit. After you've done this a while, you can usually spot the malware in the log without much help, though. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
